Dover holds the distinction of being the oldest continuous settlement in New Hampshire, first settled in 1623. Early residents built fortified log homes called garrisons to protect against conflict, earning the city its nickname, "The Garrison City." The falls on the Cochecho River later powered a thriving mill and shipbuilding economy that shaped the city through the 1800s, and much of that industrial-era architecture still defines downtown today.
